Every flock has that one bird who stands out—not just because of how they look, but because of who they are. For us, that’s Nova.

Nova’s story started in a pretty unforgettable way. He hatched during the solar eclipse in 2024, which felt like a sign from the beginning. We named him Supernova—Nova for short—and from his very first day, he’s lived up to the name.

He’s our head rooster, but you’d never guess it from his gentle nature. Nova is the kind of rooster every chicken keeper hopes for:

• He’s a watchful protector, always keeping an eye on the flock to make sure everyone is safe.
• He’s a patient father who let his chicks climb all over him like a jungle gym when they were tiny.
• He’s kind to every new chicken, welcoming them without a fuss and helping them find their place in the group.
• He crows with pride—he has one of the biggest, boldest voices I’ve ever heard—and yet he’s never aggressive with people.

One of my favorite things about Nova is how he takes treats. Whether you’re holding out mealworms, scratch grains, or just a handful of greens, he gently plucks them from your hand, never in a rush and never rough. That calm confidence is part of what makes him so special.

Every morning, I watch him strut around the coop, checking on his girls and greeting the day with that trademark crow. I feel so lucky to have a rooster like him—he’s not just a leader, but a real gem of a bird.
