Meet Poppy – One of the Most Memorable Chickens in My Flock

Some birds just have more personality than you can put into words, and for me, that’s Poppy. She’s been full of character from the very beginning. Even as a chick, she was the most outgoing of the group—always the first to investigate anything new and the first to hop up on my hand.

As she grew, she decided that my shoulders and head made better perches. Anytime I bent down to refill feeders or check on the coop, I’d feel her land on my back and make herself comfortable. She still does it to this day, and honestly, it wouldn’t feel like a normal day outside without Poppy climbing all over me.

Last year, she surprised me by going broody right on Halloween. I debated whether to let her try to hatch in the cold weather, but she was determined. I set her up in a warm corner of the coop, and she committed fully to motherhood. Three weeks later, she hatched her chick without a hitch—even with freezing nights—and took incredible care of it.

Poppy has always been one of the most social and curious chickens I’ve ever had. She’s the first to greet me at the gate, the first to try any treats, and the first to supervise whatever I’m working on. She’s also proof that when a chicken decides she wants something—whether it’s hatching eggs or climbing onto your head—you’re not going to change her mind.

I’m lucky to have a lot of great birds in my flock, but Poppy is truly one of a kind.
